Lyrica (pregabalin): Important Precautions for Its Use

A discussion of Lyrica (pregabalin) precautions and therapy discontinuation.

Video transcript

Hello and welcome to "VideoScript", presented by Drugs.com.

Today in the final of three presentations, we continue reviewing Lyrica, known by the generic name of pregabalin. We will review some precautions that are important for the use of Lyrica.

Kidney function should be determined prior to treatment with Lyrica. Patients with impaired kidney function should receive reduced doses as outlined in the package labeling.

Lyrica may cause drowsiness, dizziness and blurred vision. Patients should be cautious doing any activities that require mental alertness until the effects of Lyrica are known.

Patients should avoid the use of alcohol or other drugs that suppress the central nervous system, as this may be additive to the effects of Lyrica.

If Lyrica treatment must be discontinued, it should be slowly tapered over at least one week to avoid adverse effects. Therapy should not be abruptly stopped.

If you use Lyrica for seizure control, and discontinue the drug rapidly, the risk for seizures may increase.

Thank you for joining us at Drugs.com for a brief review of Lyrica. Please refer to our patient and professional information, drug interaction checker, and additional tools on Drugs.com.

Patients with a concern about the use of Lyrica should consult with their health care provider.
