Avian Encephalomyelitis Vaccine

Live Virus

This vaccine contains live avian encephalomyelitis virus for the vaccination of healthy chickens between ten weeks of age and four weeks before production by wing web stab or drinking water as an aid in the prevention of avian encephalomyelitis.

Store vaccine at 2-7°C (35-45°F). Do not freeze. Do not vaccinate within 21 days before slaughter. Use entire vial contents when first opened. Burn this container and all unused contents. Contains gentamicin as a bacteriostatic agent.

Tremor Blen D Indications

It is essential that the chickens be maintained under good environmental conditions and that exposure to disease viruses be reduced as much as possible.

PRECAUTIONS

1. This vaccine is not recommended for layer or breeder replacement birds that are sick or debilitated, under stress, or under ten weeks of age. It should not be used on birds that are within four weeks of egg production.

2. Vaccinate only healthy birds.

3. Mix only the amount of vaccine to be used immediately and use promptly. Use all at one time and do not stretch the dosage.

4. Do not use for vaccination except under conditions previously outlined.

5. To ensure that the progeny is protected, eggs for hatching should not be taken from the flock until four weeks following vaccination.

6. Birds vaccinated during production may suffer a 5 to 15 percent drop in egg production for a period of two to three weeks and will pass virus through the egg to any progeny hatched from eggs produced during this period.

7. Vaccinated pullets should not be added to nonvaccinated flocks in production.

8. Do not expose chicks under four weeks of age.

9. To preserve its potency during storage, the vaccine should be kept in a refrigerator at 2 to 7°C (35 to 45°F). Do not freeze. Improper storage or handling may result in a loss of potency.

10. Do not remove from refrigeration until ready for use.

11. Burn all vaccine containers, applicators, and unused vaccine when the vaccination is completed.

12. This vaccine is prepared for the vaccination of healthy birds. Improper handling or administration may result in variable responses.

WING WEB METHOD

1. Pull up on the plastic tear-flip-up top to remove the aluminum seal from the bottle containing the vaccine. Carefully pry up one edge of the rubber stopper to permit air to replace the vacuum in the bottle, then remove the stopper.

2. Remove the aluminum seal from the bottle containing the diluent, and transfer the entire contents to the bottle containing the vaccine. Replace the stopper and shake the contents vigorously until the vaccine is evenly suspended.

For Example

5 mL of diluent for each 500 dose vial

10 mL of diluent for each 1,000 dose vial

3. To apply the vaccine, dip the two-pronged applicator supplied in the package into the vaccine and stab into the webbed portion of the wing from the underside. Avoid stabbing through feathers which may wipe off the vaccine.

4. The applicator is designed to carry the proper amount of vaccine in the grooves of the needles. The needles should be touched briefly to the inner lip of the bottle before withdrawing to avoid wasting vaccine which may drop from the needles. Dip the applicator before each application.

Drinking Water Vaccination Using Pouring Application

Drinking water vaccination is recommended for healthy chickens between ten weeks of age and four weeks before production.

1. Remove all medications, sanitizers and disinfectants from the drinking water 72 hours (three days) prior to vaccination.

2. Provide sufficient waterers so that all the chickens can drink at one time. Shut off water supply and allow chickens to consume all the water in the lines.

3. Raise water lines above the chickens’ heads. Clean and rinse the waterers thoroughly.

4. Withhold all water from the chickens for a minimum of two hours in warm weather to four hours in cool weather prior to vaccination to stimulate thirst. Withdrawal time should be reduced if half-house brooding is in process.

5. Do not open or mix vaccine until ready to vaccinate.

6. Drinking water for vaccine delivery should contain 29 g (one ounce) of non-fat dry milk per 3.8 liters (one US gallon) of non-chlorinated water, or should contain milk product based stabilizer prepared according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

7. Reconstitute the vaccine in 11 liters (3 US gallons) of milk-water during cool weather or 15 liters (4 US gallons) of milk-water during warm weather for each 1,000 doses of chickens to be vaccinated.

8. Distribute vaccine solution among waterers. Avoid direct sunlight.

9. Lower waterers and allow the chickens to drink freely. Add the remaining vaccine solution to the water lines as the chickens drink.

10. Do not provide additional drinking water until all the vaccine is consumed.

Drinking Water Vaccination Using Proportioner Application

Drinking water vaccination is recommended for healthy chickens between ten weeks of age and four weeks before production. Several types of medicator/proportioners are commercially available. Set proportioner to deliver 30 mL (one ounce) of vaccine concentrate per 3.8 liters (one US gallon) of water.

1. Remove all medications, sanitizers and disinfectants from the drinking water 72 hours (three days) prior to vaccination.

2. Clean all containers, hoses and waterers prior to vaccination.

3. Withhold all water from the chickens for a minimum of two hours in warm weather to four hours in cool weather prior to vaccination to stimulate thirst. Withdrawal time should be reduced if half-house brooding is in process.

4. Do not open or mix vaccine until ready to vaccinate.

5. Calculate to supply vaccine solution at a rate of 11 liters (3 US gallons) per 1,000 chickens in cool weather and 15 liters (4 US gallons) per 1,000 chickens in warm weather. The age of the chickens should be considered when calculating water supply. Always use non-chlorinated water when vaccinating chickens.

Example

1,000 chickens in cool weather x 11 liters (3 US gallons) = 11 liters (3 US gallons).

1,000 chickens in warm weather x 15 liters (4 US gallons) = 15 liters (4 US gallons).

6. Prepare vaccine stock solution as follows:

a. Determine the quantity of vaccine concentrate required by multiplying 30 mL (one ounce) x multiples of 3.8 liters of water needed for vaccine/ drinking water.

Example

For 1,000 chickens: 3 volumes of 3.8 liters (1 US gallon) x 30 mL (1 ounce) = 90 mL (3 ounces).

b. Add 85 g (3 ounces) of non-fat dry milk per 480 mL (16 ounces) of cool water, or use a commercial milk product based stabilizer according to the manufacturer’s instructions. For 1,000 chickens add 16 g (0.5 ounces) non-fat dry milk to the 90 mL (3 ounces) of water.

c. Reconstitute the lyophilized vaccine with the milk solution. Rinse the vaccine vial to remove all the vaccine.

7. Insert proportioner hose into the vaccine stock solution and start water flow. Continue until all solution has been consumed before changing water supply to direct flow.

8. Do not medicate or use disinfectants for 24 hours after vaccination.

Precautions

Do not vaccinate diseased chickens.

Vaccinate all chickens on the premises at one time.

Administer a minimum of one dose per chicken.

Avoid stress conditions during and following vaccination.

Do not place chickens in contaminated facilities.

Exposure to disease must be minimized as much as possible.
