This treatment applies to the following species:
Company: Zoetis

pyrantel pamoate oral paste

DIN 00433780

Veterinary Use Only

Description

Strongid P is a pale yellow to buff paste containing pyrantel pamoate. Each 23.6 g (20 mL) syringe contains the equivalent of 3.6 g pyrantel base. Pyrantel pamoate is a compound belonging to a family classified chemically as tetrahydropyrimidines. It is yellow, water-insoluble crystalline salt of the tetrahydropyrimidine base and pamoic acid containing 34.6% base activity.

Strongid P Indications

For the treatment of parasitic infections caused by the adult stage of large strongyles (Strongylus vulgaris, S. equinus, S. edentatus, Triodontophorus spp.), small strongyles (Cyathostomum spp., Cylicostephanus spp.), pinworms (Oxyuris equi), ascarids (Parascaris equorum) and the common tapeworm (Anoplocephala perfoliata) in horses and foals over 8 weeks of age.

ADMINISTRATION: Strongid P paste is recommended for direct oral administration. Fasting prior to or following treatment is not required.

The following method of administration is recommended:

1. According to the weight of the horse, set the screw-gauge at the correct position on the weight-scale marked on the plunger.

2. Remove the cap from the nozzle.

3. The paste is best deposited on the upper surface (dorsum) of the tongue. Introduce the nozzle end of the syringe at the corner of the mouth (labial commisure). Direct the syringe backwards and depress the plunger to deposit the paste onto the tongue. Providing the paste is given in this way it is unlikely that any rejection will occur. Raising of the horse’s head by hand under the chin sometimes assists in the swallowing process.

4. If only part of the paste has been used (see CAUTIONS), replace the cap on the syringe nozzle and store in a cool, dry place.

DOSAGE: Administer a single dose of 6.6 mg pyrantel base per kg body weight for infections of roundworms (nematodes), and 13.2 mg pyrantel base per kg body weight for infections of tapeworms (cestodes). This dosage can be achieved by administering the product according to the following schedule:

For horses maintained on premises where re-infection is likely to occur, re-treatments may be necessary. For most effective results, re-treat these horses every 4 to 6 weeks.

CAUTIONS: The same syringe should only be used for double dosing if both the animals are healthy and are running together or are on the same premises and in direct contact with each other. It is recommended that severely debilitated animals not be treated with this drug.

Warnings

This drug is not to be administered to horses that are to be slaughtered for use in food.
