Argus SC/ST without Diluent

This treatment applies to the following species:
Company: Intervet/Merck Animal Health

Salmonella Choleraesuis Vaccine

Avirulent Live Culture

This product has been shown to be effective for the vaccination of healthy swine 3-4 weeks of age or older against Salmonella choleraesuis and Salmonella typhimurium. Duration of immunity has not been established. For more information regarding safety and efficacy data, go to productdata.aphis.usda.gov.

This product has been shown to be effective against shedding caused by Salmonella typhimurium.

WATER ADMINISTRATION:

This product was developed to be used exclusively by the oral route. See detailed instructions: WATER DELIVERY OF VACCINE.

WATER DELIVERY OF VACCINE:

● Do not open or mix Argus® SC/ST until ready to vaccinate.

● Remove all medications, sanitizers or disinfectants from drinking water before initiating oral vaccination and flush watering system to eliminate any residuals.

● Water may be withheld for one to two (1-2) hours before vaccination.

● Wearing protective gloves, rehydrate each vial of Argus® SC/ST (desiccated cake) by removing the metal ring and rubber stopper; partially fill vial with cool clean water (suggest 30 mL/100 dose vial or 50 mL/500 dose vial); replace and hold stopper firmly; agitate gently until contents fully dissolve.

● Place the vial(s) contents into the proportioner reservoir, along with additional cool clean water to provide a final stock solution volume to run 4-6 hours of delivery, as determined by the number and size of pigs, estimated in Table 1.

● Set proportioner to deliver 1 ounce (30 mL) per gallon (3.75 L) into the drinking water.

● Insert proportioner hose into Argus® SC/ST final stock solution and engage into drinking water line flow. Occasional remixing of the vaccine solution 2 to 3 times during the vaccination procedure aids in assuring a uniform dose for all swine. Pigs should consume vaccine within 4-6 hours after its rehydration.

● When all vaccine solution has been consumed, return to non-treated water flow. Disinfect and rinse the reservoir.

● Do not use antibiotics, sulfonamides or other medications in feed or water for 3 days before and 3 days after vaccination.

Table 1. Estimating doses to use:

rehydrate with 30 mL/100 dose vial = 10 doses/3 mL.

Estimating final stock solution volume:

rehydrate with 50 mL/500 dose vial = 10 doses/1 mL.

Calculations based on average daily water consumption of 15% of body weight. Young pigs or lactating sows may consume up to 20% of body weight.

NOTE: 1 fluid ounce (oz.) = 30 mL

16 fluid oz. = 1 pint

32 fluid oz. = 1 quart

128 fluid oz. = 1 US gallon

EXAMPLE: To vaccinate 90 pigs averaging 25 lbs./hd, following across the row for 25 lb. pigs shows that 100 pigs consume approximately 7.5 gallons drinking water over a 4 hour period, requiring 7.5 oz. final stock solution; rehydrate one 100 dose vial of Argus® SC/ST with a measured 30 mL of tap water; withdraw 27 mL of rehydrated vaccine (90 doses) and dilute with tap water to a final volume of approximately 7 oz. (210 mL) and place in the reservoir; start the proportioner delivery at 1 oz./gal and run until entirely consumed.

To vaccinate 460 pigs averaging 20 lbs./hd, follow across the row for 20 lb. pigs; 500 pigs will consume approximately 30 gallons drinking water over a 4 hour period, requiring 30 oz. of final stock solution; rehydrate one 500 dose vial of Argus® SC/ST with a measured 50 mL of tap water; withdraw 46 mL of rehydrated vaccine (460 doses) and dilute with tap water to a final volume of approximately 28 oz. (840 mL); place the 840 mL of diluted vaccine in the reservoir; start the proportioner delivery at 1 oz./gal. and run until entirely consumed.

CALCULATIONS:

(90 pigs: 90 hd ÷ 100 ds x 7.5 oz. = 6.75 oz. x 30 mL/oz. = 202.5 mL final volume)

(100 pigs: 100 hd ÷ 100 ds x 7.5 oz. = 7.5 oz. x 30 mL/oz. = 225 mL final volume)

(Universal: no. hd ÷ 100 ds x no. oz. per 100 hd = no. oz. x 30 mL/oz. = no. mL final volume)

(460 pigs: 460 hd ÷ 500 ds x 30 oz. = 27.6 oz. x 30 mL/oz. = 828 mL final volume)

(500 pigs: 500 hd ÷ 500 ds x 30 oz. = 30.0 oz. x 30 mL/oz. = 900 mL final volume)

(Universal: no. hd ÷ 500 ds x no. oz. per 500 hd = no. oz. x 30 mL/oz. = no. mL final volume)

Precautions

Store at 2°C - 8° C (35°F - 46°F). Do not freeze. Shake well before using. Do not mix with other products except as specified on the label. Use entire contents when first opened. Inactivate unused contents before disposal. This product has not been tested in pregnant animals. Do not vaccinate within 21 days before slaughter. Do not use antibiotics, sulfonamides or other medications in feed or water for 3 days before and 3 days after vaccination. If allergic reaction occurs, treat with epinephrine. In case of human exposure, contact a physician.
