Metomidate hydrochloride powder

DIN No 00824240

For veterinary use only

Each gram contains 1000 mg Metomidate hydrochloride

Aquacalm Indications

Metomidate hydrochloride is for the sedation and anesthesia of aquarium and non-food fish species. Sedation may be desirable for transport or removal from exhibit tanks prior to cleaning. Anesthesia may be useful to enable detailed examination or minor surgical procedures.

SPECIES:

Metomidate hydrochloride is for use as a sedative or anesthetic in aquarium and non-food members of the following classifications: Siluriformes (e.g. ornamental aquarium catfish), Cyprinidae (e.g. carp, goldfish and minnows), Poeciliidae (e.g. platyfish, live-bearers), Pomacentridae (saltwater damsels), Cichlidae (e.g. cichlids, see precaution statement) and Centrarchidae (sunfish-cold water bass).

DOSAGE:

Sedation Concentrations: 0.25-1 mg of metomidate/liter of water.

Anesthesia Concentrations: 5-10 mg of metomidate/liter of water.

ROUTE OF ADMINISTRATION:

Carefully calculate amount of dry powder needed to achieve the desired concentration for level of sedation or anesthesia. Dissolve calculated amount of metomidate hydrochloride in holding tank. Mix well. Sedated fish may lose their ability to maintain upright position or position in a stream flow. Anesthetized fish will completely lose equilibrium. Fish undergoing anesthesia may exhibit some transient muscle spasms.

MODE OF ACTION:

Although not completely understood, metomidate hydrochloride is thought to exert its activity by being absorbed from the water via the gills into the bloodstream where it produces its sedation or anesthetic affect on the central nervous system.

DURATION OF TREATMENT:

Do not extend anesthetic beyond 60 minutes or sedation beyond 8 hours. Place fish in well oxygenated, high quality water, free of metomidate to reverse sedation or anesthesia. Fish should return to normal in 20 to 90 minutes.

Contraindications

Studies indicate use of metomidate is contraindicated in fishes acclimated to highly acidic waters. Use of metomidate is also contraindicated in species of fish that rely upon accessory air breathing organs for oxygen maintenance. Complete anesthesia of air breathers may result in significant death loss.

Do not use in fish intended for human consumption. Do not repeat sedation or anesthesia within 24 hours.

Aquacalm Caution

Metomidate has been tested in representative species of each group indicated in the package insert, but HAS NOT been tested in ALL species of each group. The effect of metomidate may vary between species in a group, physical condition of fish, and water conditions. A water pH of approximately 7 is most desirable. Do not use in cichlids in highly acidic water (pH 5 or- below). Significant death loss may occur.

Warning

Not for use in fish intended for human consumption. When handling metomidate hydrochloride powder, protect eyes from contact. Do not inhale dry powder. If ingested, contact physician immediately.
