Usual Adult Dose for Skin Disinfection, Preoperative

Usual dose: 1 application applied topically to the affected area once

Comments:

• The solution should be allowed to thoroughly dry before applying surgical dressings. Avoid getting solution into hairy areas (wet hair is flammable). Hair may take up to 1 hour to dry.
• Excessive/pooled solution should be removed and the area should be allowed to dry completely.
• At the end of the prep, any remaining solution should be discarded.
• On completion of surgical procedure, removal of incise drape will remove film. Dressings should be applied following standard practices.

Administration advice:

• The solution should be applied, without scrubbing, to clean, dry, intact, residue-free skin.
• The surgical area should be painted with a single, uniform layer and allowed to completely dry. The sponge applicator should be used to absorb excess solution; any solution that gets outside of the surgical area should be removed with gauze.
• If needed, prep towels should be tucked under both sides of the neck to absorb excess solution; towels should be removed before draping.
• To reduce the risk of fire, begin draping and/or using cautery only after solution is completely dry and all solution-stained materials are removed. If incise drapes are used, they should be apply directly to dry prep.

Storage requirements:

• Excessive heat (e.g., above 40C) should be avoided.

Reconstitution/preparation techniques:

• The applicator should be grasped around the labeled portion, with a thumb on the lever of the applicator AND the sponge facing parallel to the floor.
• The lever should be snapped, and all of the solution should be allowed to flow into the sponge.

General:

• This solution is not water soluble; the solution may stain equipment.
• Use is intended for the head, neck, and small prep areas.
