Precautions

Dipivefrin is contraindicated in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma.

Remove contact lenses before administration and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.

Wait at least 5 minutes before instilling other eyedrops.

Patients should be instructed to avoid allowing the tip of the container to contact the eye, eyelid, fingers or any other surface.

Safety and effectiveness have not been established in pediatric patients (less than 18 years of age).

Dialysis

There are no data on the hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis clearance of dipivefrin. The plasma clearance of epinephrine is not enhanced by hemodialysis.

Other Comments

Dipivefrin has been shown to be effective adjunctive therapy when used with pilocarpine, carbachol, echothiophate iodide or acetazolamide.

When a patient is switched from antiglaucoma agents, other than epinephrine, to dipivefrin therapy, on the first day continue the previous medication and administer dipivefrin 1 drop in the affected eye(s) every 12 hours. On the following day, discontinue the previous antiglaucoma medication and continue to administer dipivefrin. Tonometry may be used to monitor efficacy.
