Lisinopril: Precautions for Use

An overview of important lisinopril precautions.

Video transcript

Hello and welcome to "VideoScript", presented by Drugs.com.

Today in the final of three presentations, we continue reviewing lisinopril, a common medication used for high blood pressure and heart failure. We will review some precautions that are important for the use of lisinopril.

Lisinopril may increase your potassium blood levels. Potassium supplements, potassium-sparing diuretics, and potassium-containing salt substitutes may further increase potassium levels and lead to an abnormal heart rhythm.

Patients should inform their health care providers about all medications they use, including over-the-counter and prescription drugs so that a drug interaction check may occur.

Women should not use lisinopril if they are pregnant. The use of lisinopril in the 2nd of 3rd trimester of pregnancy may be associated with injury or death in the developing fetus.

Women should stop taking lisinopril and contact their doctor right away if they become pregnant.

Angioedema, an allergic reaction that results in swelling of the face, tongue, throat or intestines, is a rare but serious side effect of lisinopril. Health care providers should be notified if a patient has a history of angioedema or an allergy to ACE inhibitors.

Patients should drink plenty of water and avoid dehydration while taking lisinopril, as dehydration may lead to abnormally low blood pressure.

Thank you for joining us at Drugs.com for a brief review of lisinopril. Please refer to our patient and professional information, drug interaction checker, and additional tools on Drugs.com.

Patients with a concern about the use of lisinopril should consult with their health care provider.
