A brief overview of precautions and side effects for Intuniv (guanfacine).
Video transcript
Today in the final of three presentations, we continue reviewing Intuniv, an FDA-approved medication used as part of a treatment program to help manage the symptoms of ADHD.
Common side effects with Intuniv include: feeling sleepy, tired or dizzy, difficulty sleeping, and stomach pain and nausea.
More serious side effects, may include: low blood pressure, low heart rate, fainting.
Low blood pressure is both a common and serious side effect seen with Intuniv. Before a child starts treatment, their doctor should be told if they have low blood pressure or heart rate, heart problems, or a history of fainting, liver or kidney problems.
The tablets need to be swallowed whole, not crushed or chewed.
Intuniv is not available in a liquid formulation, so children must be able to swallow tablets whole.

Macular degeneration
This animation shows the process of macular degeneration in the eye. The macula is the part of the retina that distinguishes fine details at the center of the field of vision. Macular degeneration results from a partial breakdown of the insulating layer between the retina and the choroid layer of blood vessels behind the retina. Macular degeneration results in the loss of central vision only.
