What is Bactrim (Bactrin)?

Bactrim (Bactrin) is an antibiotic combination used to treat a wide variety of infections. Bactrim (Bactrin) contains a sulfonamide antibiotic. It works by killing sensitive bacteria.

Bactrim (Bactrin) is used to treat certain urinary tract infections, severe middle ear infections in children, long-lasting or frequently recurring bronchitis in adults that has increased in seriousness, inflammation of the intestine due to a severe bacterial infection, and travelers' diarrhea in adults. Bactrim (Bactrin) is also prescribed for the treatment of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, and for prevention of this type of pneumonia in people with weakened immune systems.

Bactrim (Bactrin) side effects may include upset stomach, diarrhea, nausea, headache or vomiting. Sulfonamides may increase sensitivity to sunlight. Rarely, Bactrim (Bactrin) can cause serious, even fatal, side effects such as a severe peeling skin rash known as Stevens- Johnson syndrome, blood disorders (e.g., agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia), or liver damage.
